Obergurgl is renowned for the quality of its hotels - especially in the four-star range. Many of the hotels boast wellness areas, swimming pools and cuisine which would put them at the top of their class in another resort.
Hochgurgl can be even more ritzy - it is a fairly exclusive small hamlet at 2150m for those who want luxury and the ability to step onto the slopes first thing in the morning.
The first bunch of accommodation will be found approaching the base station of the gondola which rises to Hochgurgl (at the top of the map above). This area used to be known as Untergurgl but that name has been removed from the village map. (None of the hotels listed below are in this area.)
Carrying on down the road past the turning to Hochgurgl, the entrance to the village of Obergurgl proper starts at the junction where the road splits before the Festkogl gondola. Moving further into the resort a side road rises to a higher level of the resort, while the main village centre is at the lower level.
Hochgurgl can be reached either from the gondola from the entrance to the village on the main road or via the side road at the junction just before the main village. The road is closed in winter shortly after Hochgurgl - in the summer it is a scenic route into Italy.
Hochgurgl is a small hamlet with some top class hotels set in the middle of some of Austria's highest ski slopes. It can be reached by road or by gondola.
