The resort of Kühtai is located on a high saddle or pass in the Sellrain valley. Most people arriving by air would be coming from the Innsbruck end of the valley.
Innsbruck is by far the most convenient of all of the airports (in fact, its proximity is one of the main attractions of the resort. The route from the airport heads out onto the Inn valley motorway for a short distance before the Kematen exit. From there the route heads up on a mountain road which winds up to the saddle through the villages of the Sellrain valley.
Salzburg airport is the next closest option, although it is pretty much a toss-up between here and Munich. The most straightforward route is via the motorway into Germany and then turning south at Rosenheim for the journey back into Austria and to Innsbruck.
Drivers coming from Munich Airport have two options.
The first follows the motorway towards Rosenheim and then south in the direction of Kufstein - this is probably more suitable for those who are new to the area as it is on motorway most of the way.
The second is to head through Munich and then onto the motorway south to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. From there a fairly good main road heads through Mittenwald and across the Seefeld plateau before dropping down to the Inn valley in the vicinity of Kematen and the entrance to the Sellrain valley.
There are no rail connections to Kühtai. Probably the easiest method for many visitors arriving by train is to get to Innsbruck station and then change onto a regular bus service up the Sellrain valley (around one an hour).
Alternatively, more infrequent public transport is also available from Ötztal Bahnhof railway station at the end of the Ötz valley (visitors arriving from the west could find this more convenient if bus times fit in with their travel plans).
Kühtai is a small village which was formerly a summer farming area and hunting preserve at the top of a mountain pass.
The hotels are spread out along the main road over the pass, with most being at the pass height (essentially where the village centre is) and on the way down towards the reservoir in the direction of Ötz.
