Skiing in St Anton Austria

st anton austria

St Anton has come a long way since the days of impromptu ski bum parties on the steps of the town hall and cheap eats in the station buffet. The centre has been spruced up, the railway has moved to the other side of the main road and Swarovski crystal is marketing its wares in the main street.

One of Austria's top resorts, St Anton has a long and distinguished history and, indeed, the Arlberg is one of the ski areas that claim to be the origin of the modern ski technique. The first ski club in the Alps was founded here in 1901 and the technique of Hannes Schneider was developed by later local stars like Karl Schranz, who worked to bring the 2001 World Ski Championships to the resort.

Location: 6580 St Anton am Arlberg - Tyrol - Austria

St Anton is located on the Tyrol side of the Arlberg pass, which separates the Tyrol and the Vorarlberg. The Arlberg tunnel, under the surrounding mountain ranges, ensures all-weather access in either direction.

On the old Arlberg road, two further resorts lie hidden in the winter snows - the exclusive high-altitude hamlet of St Christoph with its ski training centre and top-class accommodation, just before the Arlberg pass. And, at the base of the other side of the pass, the tiny village of Stuben, with its charming hotels and guesthouses and the birthplace of Hannes Schneider.

All three are connected by ski runs, lifts and a comprehensive ski bus system. The Arlberg pass also includes the resorts of Lech and Zürs (over the Flexen pass) on the ticket.

St Anton has a good range of hotels, guesthouses, apartments and chalets. Most are located in the main village at the foot of the slopes or in the suburb of Nasserein.

The St Anton ski area can be accessed from a selection of lifts which leave in all directions from the centre of the town and the suburb of Nasserein. The Galzig, Gampen and Rendl areas are all served by cable cars or gondolas. Parking in the resort can be expensive and problematic - day-trippers are probably best using one of the big car parks located at the entrance to the resort.
