Skiing in Neustift Austria

neustift

Neustift is the best-known tourist destination in the Stubai valley and the administrative centre of one of the biggest regions in the Tyrol.

The village may not be the largest (that honour goes to nearby Fulpmes) but its proximity to the popular Stubai glacier ski area - one of the most popular glacier ski areas in Austria - has ensured an enduring popularity that brings over a million guest-nights to the area in a year.

The area around Neustift shows plenty of traces of a rich history - relics from the Bronze Ages, names of settlements that date from Roman times, and a strong tradition of mountain farming and climbing.

In fact the area originally was better known to tourists for its mountain climbing and walking in the days before the packaging of winter sports and the creation of the large glacier ski area at the end of the valley in the 1970s.

Neustift-Dorf is the main settlement in the local area, but there are plenty of smaller villages and hamlets located along the valley floor in the area covered by the Neustift administrative area - all with hotel accommodation.

Neustift's skiing centres mainly on the Stubai glacier - it is the closest main settlement to the lift station at the end of the valley. But it has a small ski area of its own on the Elfer and there are other resorts in the valley which can be reached by ski-bus.

The Stubai valley is easy to reach from most parts of Europe. Innsbruck airport provides a close arrival location for air travellers and the north-south-east-west junction at Innsbruck makes road travel fairly simple.

Neustift is the last main settlement in the Stubai valley before the Stubai glacier.

The village of Neustift itself is a lively centre popular with travel companies and hosting the main supermarkets, bars and restaurants.

Hotel accommodation is also available in the nearby villages and hamlets of Neder and Kampl on the Innsbruck side and Milders (probably the next biggest), Krössbach, Volderau, Gasteig and Mutterberg on the glacier side. An efficient valley bus and skibus service connects the different settlements.
