hotels & travel information

Kaprun can be easily reached from three directions, as can be seen from the map on the left. From the west the route leads over Pass Thurn from the direction of Kitzbühel; from the north via Zell am See; and from the east via the motorway leading south from Salzburg.

Most of the accommodation in Kaprun is located either in the centre, on the way out to the area around the old medieval fortifications, or up the road leading towards the lifts heading up to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier.

Salzburg Airport is certainly the most popular airport for Kaprun, but Munich and Innsbruck are also possibilities.

Airport gif Salzburg Airport

Salzburg airport is just under 100 kilometers away from Kaprun. What is probably the most popular route takes the A10 motorway south from the city towards the Tauern tunnel. The motorway exit is just before Bischofshofen and heads through St Johann im Pongau and Bruck before reaching Kaprun. An alternate route on more minor roads is to cross Germany via Bad Reichenhall to Lofer and then to head south through Saalfelden and Zell am See.

Airport gif Innsbruck Airport

Innsbruck Airport is not usually the main choice for skiers heading to Kaprun - however the simple choice of flights available to the airport and, of course, availability may dictate transfers to the resort from the Tyrol. If this is the case, the best route is along the motorway to Wörgl, then via Kitzbühel over Pass Thurn and down along the valley to Kaprun.

Airport gif Munich Airport

Those driving themselves from Munich airport to Kaprun have a fairly straightforward route south towards Rosenheim and over the border past Kufstein. Probably the simplest way in winter conditions is to take the route via Wörgl, Westendorf and Pass Thurn - some of the alternate routes are via Lofer or Fieberbrunn.

There is also a small railway station at Fürth on the Mittersill line about two kilometres from Kaprun.
