How to get to Stubai

Last updated: 14.10.2025

Getting to Stubai

As can be seen from the distances, Innsbruck airport is far and away the most preferred arrival airport for visitors who are heading to one of the resorts in the Stubaital (Stubai valley). Fulpmes is closer to the entrance to the valley, Neustift is closer to the Stubai glacier at the end of it.

Visitors arriving by car should note that the stretch of motorway leading south from Innsbruck to the exit for the Stubaital is a private toll motorway that is not covered by the motorway “vignette” (toll sticker). However it is usually a false economy (of only a few Euros) to attempt to take main roads from Innsbruck through the Wipp valley to Schönberg, especially on a busy weekend.

Driving to Stubai

Innsbruck Airport
Innsbruck has been a top destination for ski charter flights – especially from the northern European countries – but now the introduction over the past few years of new lower-fare scheduled flights from major destinations like London has made it into a great option for those who are heading in from further away.

The airport lies on the banks of the river Inn to the west of the city only a few kilometres outside the city centre. A regular bus service runs from the airport into various part of the city and there is a busy taxi rank directly outside the main arrivals hall.

Salzburg Airport
Salzburg Airport is a good second choice for those wanting to travel to Neustift or Fulpmes. The easiest route from the airport is to take the motorway through Germany to Kufstein and then follow the A12 along the Inn valley.

Munich Airport
Munich airport is another fine choice for visitors to the Stubai valley – once again the route runs almost entirely on the motorway from Munich airport to Innsbruck and then south to . Motorists should take the route south bypassing the city centre of Munich and head to Kufstein and then, as above, into Austria at Kufstein. An alternate option – probably more suitable for those who know the area – is to head into Munich and then south to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Seefeld and down to Innsbruck.

Fulpmes Train Station

Fulpmes has its own tram railway station as it is on the local Stubaitalbahn network. This departs from various stops in Innsbruck (including the main and west railway stations) around every 50 minutes in the day time.

Although this tram trip is very scenic, it takes over an hour and a more efficient way of arriving in Fulpmes (and the only way for Neustift) is via the local Innsbruck bus service. This takes just over half an hour to Fulpmes and around 45 minutes to Neustift.
