stubai valley ski resorts

The Stubaital is a long and winding valley to the south of Innsbruck and home to no less than four ski areas. By far and away the best-known is the Stubai glacier far away at the end of the valley, which is usually open from early autumn through to early summer.

The more accessible Schlick 2000 ski area above the town of Fulpmes is the other particularly popular ski area and is a favourite of Innsbruck residents and visitors.

Skiing on the Stubai glacier

The Stubai glacier offers some of the highest skiing in the Alps and is especially popular before and after the snows have hit the lower resorts for the main winter ski season. For a glacier ski area it has an extensive lift infrastructure and a good variety of runs. Visitors are sometimes surprised at how long it takes to travel to the ski area - the bottom lift is 35km away from the entrance to the valley to the south of Innsbruck.

Skiing at Schlick 2000

Schlick 2000 is the other popular ski area in the Stubai valley. It is relatively close to the valley entrance and thus to the motorway heading south from Innsbruck. There are also small ski areas at Mieders and above Neustift at the top of the Elfer lift.

Hotel accommodation is also available in the nearby villages and hamlets of Neder and Kampl on the Innsbruck side and Milders (probably the next biggest), Krössbach, Volderau, Gasteig and Mutterberg on the glacier side. An efficient valley bus and skibus service connects the different settlements.
