Car Rental from Munich

Renting a car allows visitors to travel more flexibly and reach resorts faster. This is especially convenient for groups or families with ski equipment and luggage who want to ski more than one Ski Area.

For car rental options in Munich Downtown or Munich Airport, we recommend DiscoverCars.com. The platform compares prices from major car rental companies and allows easy booking.

Public Transport from Munich

The rail connection from Munich Airport and Munich Hauptbahnhof to Innsbruck and Salzburg is very good. Both from Salzburg and Innsbruck you can reach many ski resorts by train. However, travelling with public transport will always be the slowest option – the travel times are often 1-3 hours slower than by transfer or rental car.

We have a dedicated article about rail skiing in Austria which shows all major rail routes and Ski Resorts reachable by train.

Check timetables in advance, especially for weekend and holiday travel when services may be more limited.

Frequently Asked Questions about skiing near Munich

Several ski resorts can be reached from Munich in under 75 minutes. The nearest include Brauneck, Spitzingsee, and Sudelfeld, all just south of the city.
Yes — skiing near Munich is surprisingly varied. You’ll find everything from small Bavarian hills perfect for beginners to major german ski areas like Garmisch and Zugspitze with over 40 km of slopes and high-altitude skiing. For those willing to drive a little further, Austria’s Söll, Ellmau, and Kitzbühel or other mentioned resorts offer even larger, world-class ski terrain within 2–2½ hours.
Arguably Germany’s best ski resorts are Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Zugspitze, especially for snow reliability. Also Oberstdorf Kleinwalsertal is considered as one of the best with 130km of slopes plenty of distance to ski. Brauneck is considered the best within an hour. While not as large as Austrian resorts, they offer well-prepared pistes, good lift systems, and plenty of alpine charm — ideal for day trips or short weekend skiing trips from Munich.
For a one-day ski trip from Munich by train we consider Brauneck (Lenggries) and Spitzingsee as the best and most convenient options. If you have a (rental) car and prefer a bigger resort, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is just a 30 minutes longer drive- therefore also very good for a day trip.
As already answered in the question before. Brauneck is a great day trip for skiing from Munich. You can take the hourly train to Lenggries and then take the bus to the valley station of Brauneck. Also Spitzingsee is easily reachable by taking the hourly train to Schliersee and then take the bus to the valleystation Spitzingsee. Both ski resorts offer lockers to rent to store your bags and clothes.
