Katschberg Ski Area Overview
Katschberg offers compact, well-organised skiing on both sides of the mountain pass, with runs starting on either side above Katschberg or above St. Margarethen im Lungau. The ski area is largely made up of very wide, open pistes that are ideal for both beginners and intermediate skiers, with a good selection of longer runs and a handful of steeper sections to add variety for more advanced skiers.
Thanks to its altitude and efficient snowmaking, skiing conditions are usually reliable throughout the season, making Katschberg a popular choice for families and relaxed ski holidays. Katschberg has the reputation of beeing the sportiest family ski area

Skiing in Katschberg - Details
The main lift hub in Katschberg sits just above the settlement, with several chairlifts and a gondola providing quick access to the surrounding slopes. Heading towards the Aineck side, skiers will find some of the longest runs in the area, including the “A1” red piste that descend all the way back towards St. Margarethen. These runs are particularly enjoyable for confident intermediates looking for uninterrupted descents. But also one of the steepest black runs in the Area the black 11a Direttissima going back down to Katschberg.
On the Tschaneck side, the terrain is just as good, with a dense network of blue and easy red runs served by modern chairlifts and draglifts. This part of the ski area is well suited to beginners and families, with plenty of space to practise and good visibility across the slopes.
While Katschberg is not known to has as much challenging expert terrain as other big Austrian ski resorts, there are a few black slopes with steep sections such as the 11a. Snowboarders and freestyle skiers will find a small snowpark area on the Aineck side just above St. Margarethen, though the focus of the resort remains firmly on piste skiing rather than freestyle and off piste skiing.
The layout of the ski area makes it easy to return to the village from almost anywhere on the mountain, reinforcing Katschberg’s reputation as a convenient, ski-in ski-out style destination.
