It may be an Indian summer in many European countries but the skiing in Austria goes through the summer on one of the glaciers. And other high ski resorts are making the final preparations for the end of September or October.
But for the main winter season is still a few months away with the Austrian government announcing strict precautions about the virus for ski resorts. However it looks like the winter ski season will be going ahead so here’s a quick rundown of some of the main resorts in Austria and when they open.
Obergurgl kicks off the season as one of the first non-glacier resorts to start up from November 18, 2021.

One of Sölden’s glacier is already open but the winter season proper starts with the World Cup ski racing event in October on the Rettenbach glacier. The women’s giant slalom is on the 23th and the men’s on the 24th of the month.

St Anton has its opening weekend scheduled for 03 December this year.

Ischgl starts out this season on 25 November.

Moving on we travel over to the province of Salzburg and its own high-level resort. Obertauern kicks off the season on 18 November.

The Zell am See / Kaprun ski area has the advantage of the Kitzsteinhorn glacier which opens in the middle of October, given good snow conditions.
