Down in the valley, Tyroleans are still enjoying the mild sunshine of late summer but at altitude the Pitztal glacier will start skiing as planned next weekend (21/22 September).
“The extensive snowfalls at the beginning of September make the planned start of the season possible. In addition to the first recreational athletes, top athletes are now expected for test runs – especially due to the steep slopes at Hinteren Brunnenkogel,” explains Eberhard Schultes, Managing Director of the Pitztaler Gletscherbahn.
Skiing operates daily from this weekend until 13.00. Café 3.440, Austria’s highest coffee house with its own confectionery, can be reached via the Wildspitzbahn, but is open later – daily until 15.30.
The official prelude to the new winter season will be celebrated by the Pitztal Glacier on 19 and 20 October with the “Pitztal Glacier Ski & Show” event: the programme includes a large ‘testival’ for skis and snowboards with product presentations, après-ski with the group “Tiroler Wind”, sunset in Café 3.440 with sounds by saxophonist Maria Kofler and the Tyrol’s highest early morning pint.
