Austria Closes Ski Lifts

Austria has announced that it is closing ski lifts across the country from this Tuesday, 03 November as part of the newly-announced lockdown measures against the coronavirus.

The use of cable cars, gondolas and any other mechanical means of uphill transport has been banned until the end of November, effectively closing down those Austrian ski resorts which were already open and delaying the opening of other ski resorts in the country until at least the beginning of December.

In addition to the ski lift measures, stays for non-business purposes will not be allowed at hotels and other guest accommodation during November.

Contact and team sports have also been halted, with individual sports remaining permitted. Ski touring, winter walking and snowshoe hiking are all therefore still allowed.

“Let’s use the time to keep moving. That’s good and healthy for the heart and the brain”, said Vice-Chancellor and Minister for Sport Werner Kogler (Greens) at the press conference late Saturday afternoon. “The outdoor facilities are still open for individual sport.”
