Short on time but craving fresh snow and Alpine charm? Austria is made for ski weekends — fast transfers, snow-sure slopes, and lively après-ski villages just a couple of hours from Munich, Salzburg, or Innsbruck. Whether you’re planning a spontaneous long weekend or flying in for a quick ski break, these article show you where and how to have maximum skiing with minimum travel.

With compact regions and excellent lift networks, Austria makes short ski breaks surprisingly easy. You can arrive Friday morning, hit the slopes by noon, and still enjoy an après-ski drink before sunset. Have a full day of skiing on Saturday and Sunday morning and head back home on Sunday.

How to plan your ski weekend trip to Austria

The first thing you need to decide is which month you want to plan your ski weekend in Austria for. Is it November or April? If so, your options are limited to a few resorts that are guaranteed to have snow. If it’s January to March, you can choose whichever resort you like. A ski weekend getaway is a short trip from Friday to Sunday or Saturday to Monday.

The most important thing for a weekend skiing trip is the timing of the flights. Arrive before noon and depart in the evening to enjoy up to two and a half days of skiing in one of Austria’s famous resorts.

Secondly, how long it takes to get from the airport to the ski resort is also a huge factor – missing the train or bus due to a short delay collecting your luggage could cost you hours that you could be spending on the slopes.

Thirdly, the location of your apartment is also be important. Choose apartments close within an ski resort so you don’t have to drive to the ski lifts.

Flights & airports overview 2026/2027 season

To allow enough time for skiing, it is important to choose flights with good departure and arrival times and short transfer times. This leaves you with a few potential airports: Innsbruck, Salzburg, Munich and Zurich. Munich and Zurich are large international airports, while Innsbruck and Salzburg are smaller airports with fewer departures. Below, you will find links to the list of possible flights to Innsbruck and Salzburg for your ski weekend getaway in Austria. To find flights to Munich or Zurich, please search on your preferred flight search portal.

Transportation options

Choose the transport option that best fits your landing time, group size, desired level of comfort and budget. The cheapest option is usually public transport, but it is also the longest. The most comfortable option is a pre-arranged private transfer, while the most flexible option is a rental car.

  • You can check the public transport timetable at oebb.at to find your desired connection. Make sure you book a flexible ticket in case your arrival is delayed.
  • For private or shared transfers, regardless of group size, we usually recommend Alps2Alps.com. Use the promo code ‘SKIAUSTRIA‘ to save 5% on private transfers.
  • The third option is to hire a car; every airport has a few car rental companies. To find the best deal on your preferred car, we recommend Discovercars.com to compare all these companies.

Where to Stay

When you’re on a short weekend trip, you want to be the first on the slopes and the last to leave the après-ski scene. Just kidding — you usually can’t achieve both. When it comes to accommodation, the more expensive option is to stay in the ski resort within walking or skiing distance of the ski lift. The cheaper option is to stay in the surrounding villages and take the ski bus or hire a car to get to the ski lift. For a short trip, a large spa area and lots of amenities are usually unnecessary. Every ski resort mentioned on Ski-Austria has a dedicated hotels site (the link ends with /hotels/) showing recommended and handpicked accommodation within the resorts.
