chalets in St Anton
St Anton is one of the few Austrian resorts where chalet holidays have really taken hold (there are also a few in the Lech area and in some of the resorts in the lower part of the Tyrol).
Part of the reason is the attraction of the resort for keen skiers who are looking for a way to build a life there - many of the smaller chalet operators are couples or groups of friends who have met while working seasons in St Anton or in other ski resorts around the world.
What can you expect from a chalet holiday?
If you have never tried one before, the original idea was one of a "house party" and that style still retains a certain degree of validity.
Guests eat breakfast and evening meal together at a certain time and are served by the chalet personnel. Showers and/or bathrooms are often shared between rooms, and the hot water supply at the end of a day's skiing can be touch-and-go.
The food tends to be hearty (porridge and cooked breakfasts) at the beginning of the day and "dinner-party" style in the evening. One common staple of the chalet holiday is an unlimited supply of wine during the evening meal until the coffee is served. Another favourite is the afternoon coffee and cake, which is cooked by the staff in the morning before they leave for their skiing and consumed by chalet guests on their return from the slopes.
It is also usual for the chalet staff to have one night off during the week, where guests are left to fend for themselves, or to take part in an organised traditional meal at a nearby restaurant.
Luxury chalets often have improved breakfasts (champagne, salmon, etc.), en-suite facilities and upgraded wine lists. Some of them will not have the traditional "day off".
