air travel to obertauern
For a ski resort located high on a mountain pass, Obertauern has a relatively uncomplicated access route from its nearby airports. Salzburg is by far the easiest to use, given a choice, but the smaller Klagenfurt Airport is also not too problematic.
Flights into Innsbruck and Munich should only be taken if there is no other choice as the journey from both airports is a long one.
Salzburg
Airport
Salzburg airport boasts the easiest transfer and the shortest distance to Obertauern. The route takes the motorway south from the city towards the Tauern tunnel and cuts off just before that junction around the historic town of Radstadt and up through Untertauern onto the pass.
Klagenfurt Airport
Located to the south of Obertauern on the shores of the Wörthersee, Klagenfurt is also well within reach of the resort. A toll motorway leads north from Villach to the St Michael exit and the Murtal road before the turn onto the Katschberg Bundesstrasse and through Tamsweg to the resort.
Innsbruck
Airport
Innsbruck Airport is a long way away from the heights of the Tauern but some travellers may be forced to take one of the many charter flights which arrive in Innsbruck at a weekend. In this case, the best route heads along the motorway via Kufstein and Salzburg and then follows the directions from Salzburg.
Munich
Airport
Munich Airport is likewise a lengthy journey from Obertauern. In this case the route would head to Salzburg on the marked motorway route and then follow the directions from there.
