Kaltenbach is a small village in the Ziller valley where winter tourism has made a tremendous difference to the lives of the inhabitants. Visitors to Austria might not have heard that much about it in the travel company brochures but it has become a favourite for independent travel.

Since the connection of the Hochzillertal and Hochfügen ski areas in 2004 the ski area has become one of the largest three ski areas in the Ziller valley - as well as being the most accessible - and it certainly can hold its head up in the company of other more well-known Austrian ski resorts.

Like much of the Ziller valley, Kaltenbach was originally a farming village, with some small-scale mining of the local rock for the healing oil which was extracted from it and exported.

Kaltenbach really boomed with the start of the explosion of interest in ski holidays and the construction of the lifts in the 60s and 70s.

There is a small selection of hotels in Kaltenbach and Ried im Zillertal next door, plus the village of Stumm across on the other side of the main Ziller valley road and the river.

Hochfügen Austria

Access to the ski area is excellent, with a large parking area just off the main road and a double gondola rising from the edge of the car park. From the top of the gondola skiing extends to the left and right in a number of bowls and connects into Hochfügen (pictured above).

Kaltenbach is easily reached by public transport or car. There is a train station near the ski lifts and the village is in the middle of the Ziller valley with good access to the Inn valley motorway.
