itter austria
The main part of Itter is located about a kilometre to the south of the bottom gondola station in an attractive position above the junction of the Brixen and Leuken valleys. With the village being somewhat outside the mainstream of ski areas it has a pleasant homely atmosphere in contrast to some of the party festivities of some its neighbours.
The position of Itter is not only attractive - it was also an important strategic point and fortifications have been recorded here for over 1000 years. Control changed hands from power to power in the Middle Ages, through Napoleonic times, and up until the end of WWII. Schloss Itter, the fortified castle building located just outside the centre, was converted into a luxury hotel in the 1950s but is now in private hands.
itter skiing
The ski area in Itter consists of two drag-lifts from the village centre. These are very suitable for beginners, but also provide access on a long flat ski run to the Salvista gondola station.
The gondola provides access to the main SkiWelt ski area and arrives into it near the Söll area - as detailed on the Söll skiing page - with routes available into Hochsöll or, via the Rigi, to the Hopfgarten side.
Returning home, there is a long red run with plenty of variants down to the bottom of the gondola station, with options to cut off for the main part of the village. For those who'd rather take the easy route at the end of the day, there is a regular ski bus service from the lift base back to Itter.
